The Breath Of Memory El aliento de la memoria

Sylvia Luna smells the memory of the ancient Otomi people in the young needles of wild rosemary.  Sylvia Luna percibe el aroma del recuerdo del antiguo pueblo otomí en las jóvenes agujas del romero silvestre.

The sun was just cracking open through the low clouds along the high-desert horizon line outside San Miguel when Sylvia Luna, an indigenous Otomi woman, gathered some small wild rosemary stems in her hands.  She gently crushed them, held the soft “needles” close to her nose, and breathed deeply from a memory 1500 years in the making.  She smiled.  She remembers.

El sol apenas comenzaba a abrirse paso entre las nubes bajas a lo largo del horizonte del desierto alto, en las afueras de San Miguel, cuando Sylvia Luna, una mujer indígena otomí, reunió en sus manos unos pequeños tallos de romero silvestre. Los aplastó suavemente, acercó las suaves “agujas” a su nariz y respiró profundamente un recuerdo forjado a lo largo de 1500 años. Sonrió. Ella recuerda.

Silvia traces her cultural heritage back to the beginning in Mexico. Centuries before the Aztec came to power. Sylvia is a proud Otomi. The Otomi were the mother culture in this part of the world. They invented healthcare and beauty products out of the necessity to survive, while living in one of the hottest and most inhospitable places on earth - Sylvia’s home, the high desert of Central Mexico.

Silvia remonta su herencia cultural hasta los orígenes en México, siglos antes de que los aztecas llegaran al poder. Silvia es una orgullosa otomí. Los otomíes fueron la cultura madre en esta parte del mundo. Ellos crearon productos de salud y belleza por necesidad de supervivencia, mientras vivían en uno de los lugares más calurosos e inhóspitos de la Tierra: el hogar de Silvia, el desierto del centro de México.

She’s not a shaman, but she helps heal her neighbors. Her son laughs and says, “Moma, you’re a witch!”  Sylvia Luna uses her entrepreneurial spirit and ancient knowledge to gather herbs, plants, and flowers from the desert to heal and pamper the body. She learned how to do this by talking to the teachers, the women, the healers, the old ones, and, to be fair, in 2026, a person has got to use YouTube, right?

Ella no es chamana, pero ayuda a sanar a sus vecinos. Su hijo se ríe y dice: “Mamá, ¡eres una bruja!”. Sylvia Luna utiliza su espíritu emprendedor y conocimientos ancestrales para recolectar hierbas, plantas y flores del desierto con el fin de sanar y consentir el cuerpo. Aprendió a hacerlo hablando con las maestras, las mujeres, las curanderas, los ancianos y, siendo justos, en 2026, una persona tiene que usar YouTube, ¿verdad?

Sylvia uses the rhythms of nature to know when to gather herbs and plants.  In her house in the campo on the outskirts of San Miguel, she makes shampoo, hand soap, creams, lotions, teas, and medical remedies.  Almost 30 different products. It’s a family affair.  Her business is called Luna, Medicina Con Amor. 

Sylvia utiliza los ritmos de la naturaleza para saber cuándo recolectar hierbas y plantas. En su casa en el campo, en las afueras de San Miguel, elabora shampoo, jabón para manos, cremas, lociones, tés y remedios medicinales. Casi 30 productos diferentes. Es un esfuerzo familiar. Su negocio se llama Luna, Medicina con Amor.

For Sylvia, it started about 4 years ago.  Her family needed extra money to survive.  But instead of doing domestic work for rich gringos, she decided to go back in time to study the old ways of the Otomi, and gradually she learned how to work with what the desert provides her.

Para Sylvia, todo comenzó hace unos 4 años. Su familia necesitaba dinero extra para sobrevivir. Pero en lugar de trabajar como empleada doméstica para gringos ricos, decidió volver en el tiempo para estudiar las antiguas tradiciones de los otomíes y, poco a poco, aprendió a trabajar con lo que el desierto le ofrece.

What makes Sylvia’s story compelling is not just that she does all this with almost no money or that she is indigenous or entrepreneurial. It is that she sits exactly at the intersection of four long histories:

  • The survival of Otomí knowledge from 6,000 BCE

  • The economic reality of living in modern rural Mexico in 2026.

  • The transformation of ancestral healing into a small-scale enterprise for health and beauty products. 

  • The spiritual and entrepreneurial journey of simply trying to find a place for her family to stand in the world

Lo que hace convincente la historia de Sylvia no es solo que haga todo esto con casi nada de dinero, ni que sea indígena o emprendedora. Es que se encuentra exactamente en la intersección de cuatro largas historias:

La supervivencia del conocimiento otomí desde el 6000 a. C.

La realidad económica de vivir en el México rural moderno en 2026.

La transformación de la medicina ancestral en un pequeño emprendimiento de productos de salud y belleza.

El camino espiritual y emprendedor de simplemente intentar encontrar un lugar para que su familia se sostenga en el mundo.

Doctors are nowhere in the campo, so a woman who knows the old ways can help treat an upset stomach, stop coughs, heal burns, treat inflammation, calm anxiety, clean the body, and make a person feel good about themselves again. 

Los médicos no están en el campo, así que una mujer que conoce las antiguas tradiciones puede ayudar a tratar el malestar estomacal, detener la tos, curar quemaduras, tratar la inflamación, calmar la ansiedad, limpiar el cuerpo y hacer que una persona vuelva a sentirse bien consigo misma.

 

 

Sylvia cooks and mixes the ingredients for rosemary hand soap in her kitchen at home. Sylvia cocina y mezcla los ingredientes para el jabón de manos de romero en la cocina de su casa.

Back at home, Sylvia mixes water with eight different plants, including rosemary and guava leaves. She builds a fire from small mesquite limbs and cooks the mixture for almost three hours. It will become an incredible shampoo. In the simple kitchen of her home, Sylvia cooks/mixes glycerine soap cubes, dried rosemary, collagen, vitamin E, and essential oil. She pours it into molds to make scented hand soap.  She makes personal variations on many recipes to create all of her beauty products, healing mixtures, and teas.

De vuelta en casa, Sylvia mezcla agua con ocho plantas diferentes, incluyendo romero y hojas de guayaba. Enciende un fuego con pequeñas ramas de mezquite y cocina la mezcla durante casi tres horas. Se convertirá en un shampoo increíble. En la sencilla cocina de su hogar, Sylvia derrite y mezcla cubos de jabón de glicerina, romero seco, colágeno, vitamina E y aceite esencial. Luego lo vierte en moldes para hacer jabón de manos aromático. Realiza variaciones personales de muchas recetas distintas para elaborar todos sus productos de belleza, mezclas curativas y tés.
